AI Creatives for Advertising: What Works, What Doesn’t, and Where’s the Limit

AI kreativy pro reklamu — umělá inteligence v tvorbě reklamních vizuálů

AI can generate ad visuals in minutes. But does it always work? A critical look at tools, real results, and the limits of AI creatives in practice.

AI creatives: revolution or hype?

AI can generate an ad banner in 30 seconds. Midjourney creates photorealistic images that would cost a photographer thousands. Meta Advantage+ Creative automatically generates variants of your ads. Google Asset Generation creates images for Performance Max.

Sounds like every marketer’s dream. And partly it is. But after 12 months of testing AI creatives in real campaigns, the picture is clear: AI is a powerful tool, but it’s not a magic button.

Tools worth your attention

Image generation

  • Midjourney — best aesthetic quality, ideal for lifestyle and brand visuals. Weaker with text and specific products.
  • DALL-E 3 (ChatGPT) — better text handling, easier to use. Quality a step below Midjourney.
  • Adobe Firefly — Photoshop integration, commercially safe (trained on licensed data).
  • Meta AI Image Generation — directly in Ads Manager, generates background variants and edits to existing creatives.

Video and animation

  • Runway Gen-3 — generates short video clips from text or image. Good for concepts, not final production.
  • Sora (OpenAI) — impressive length and quality, but limited access and high cost.
  • CapCut AI — automatic captions, editing, and effects. More practical than generating from scratch.

Tip: Start with tools already built into ad platforms — Meta Advantage+ Creative and Google Asset Generation. They’re free, integrated, and optimized for ad formats.

Where AI creatives excel

Variations and testing. Need 20 banner variants for A/B testing? AI handles it in an hour. What used to take a design team a week is now a matter of prompts and iterations.

Generic lifestyle images. “Young woman working on laptop in a café” — AI generates this better than most stock photo libraries. And it looks unique, not like a photo you’ve seen on 50 other websites.

Rapid prototyping. Testing a concept before investing in professional production. An AI moodboard in 20 minutes instead of 2 days.

Where AI creatives fail

Warning: AI is not “press a button and get a perfect ad.” The following scenarios require human intervention:

Text in images. AI models still generate garbled text. “50% OFF” might become “5O% OEF”. Every image with text needs manual review.

Specific products. Your particular wine bottle, your shoe model — AI hasn’t seen them and won’t generate them accurately. You need original product photos.

Brand consistency. AI doesn’t know your brand guidelines. Each image can look different — different style, colors, mood. Without post-production and human oversight, you lose visual identity.

Complex scenes with multiple people. Hands with 6 fingers, odd anatomical proportions, unrealistic interactions — still a problem even with the best models.

Legal risks. Some models are trained on data without clear licenses. Adobe Firefly is an exception (commercially safe). With others, there’s risk that generated images too closely resemble existing work.

The hybrid approach: AI + human

Best results come from combining AI and human work:

  1. Strategy and concept — human (AI doesn’t know your market and customers)
  2. First draft and variations — AI (speed and volume)
  3. Selection and refinement — human (quality and brand fit)
  4. Text and copy — human with AI assist (ChatGPT for drafts, human for final version)
  5. A/B testing — data decides what works

From practice: For a fashion client, we tested AI creatives (Midjourney) vs professional photography in Meta Ads. AI variants had 23% higher CTR but 11% lower conversion rate. Reason: AI images attracted clicks, but the product didn’t look exactly like reality — customers were disappointed after clicking. Solution: AI for lifestyle context + real product photos.

When AI creatives pay off and when they don’t

Worth it: small budgets without a design team, rapid hypothesis testing, generating variations for Performance Max, content marketing and social media.

Not worth it: premium brands with strict visual identity, product photography (e-commerce), cases where you need 100% control over output.

Key takeaway: AI can’t replace a strategist who knows who you’re selling to and why. It generates pixels, not ideas. Use it as a tool, not as a replacement for marketing thinking.
